The Great Gatsby with Mrs. Lee

movie theater information including map and ticket costs can be found here: Yeongdeungpo CGV.

Dear Students,

Congratulations for completing the arduous process of the IGCSE examinations. I am already proud of you and with much anticipation look forward to seeing your results in August.

From now until the end of the year, you are in the unique position of not having homework or coursework required of you. However, here are some suggestions on how to make the rest of the school year meaningful:

1.     Past papers we have taken before are available for your review. If you’d like to reattempt the papers to raise you grade in class for your SFS quarter grade, you may do so at any time. Your portfolios are in my classroom. Because you have the opportunity to redo your work for a better score with one-to-one feedback (the same opportunity that has been available to you all year), no one should walk away from this course with a grade that accurately reflects skill acquisition.

2.     It is my opinion that there is a relation that ties overall life satisfaction to how much of your time and effort you allocate to serving yourself versus how much you use serving others. Now that you have the luxury of time on your hands, having completed your IGCSE exams, I hope to encourage you to find ways to encourage others in your community that are still taking exams and extend that generosity on your part to your families and other communities. While it is a gesture that will please others, it will also contribute to your overall happiness and satisfaction.

3.     Take this time to say goodbye to those students and teachers who are leaving SFS campus this year or conversely, say goodbye yourself. That means having meaningful conversations, writing letters, breaking bread. As we are a transient community, we cannot disregard the importance of marking the many changes we see in the members of our community. It is a way to remember the value we place on forging and maintaining relationships.

4.     I’d also like to invite you all to watch the Great Gatsby with me during after school hours. We didn’t get to read the text during the movie but I’d love to share the experience of seeing it in theaters for the first time with my students. We’ve come a long way after two years of studying together so I hope to see the film with you as a gesture of celebration. I will be at the CGV movie theater in Yeongdeungpo (near Yeongdeungpo Subway Station in the Times Square Mall) at 7:30 on Friday, June 7th. Please RSVP by signing up with me in room 015 no later than Friday, May 31st as tickets fill up quickly. Please pay for your ticket up front cash because the cost of the movie ranges from 10,000 - 13,000. The exact price will be posted soon. Popcorn is on me!

It’s been my pleasure being your teacher and I’m very proud of you. Again, congratulations on completing your first set of external examinations.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Youngen Lee

Mrs. Lee's Schedule from May 6th to May 16th

Due to the IB exams taken in the basement of the HS, all of my classes have been rescheduled to other various locations for the next two weeks. Refer to the schedule below to see where class is, giving particular attention to the room changes as we may not meet in the same room each day. If you are a student that is not on IGCSE release and must meet with me, please meet me in the library, rather than the room assignments you may have been given.

Section 3 Homework for Wednesday, April 24th: Complete 0500 First Language paper 3 exam for Sections 1 and 2.

Read the essays above to get an idea of what a 25/25 paper looks like. Note the structure and ideas in the writing, and disregard the quality of the sentences themselves. What qualities DID exist in the 25/25 exam that may have qualified it to higher band status?

We'll discuss these findings on Friday, April 26th.

Friday, April 12th (ALL SECTIONS)

Dear Students,

I'm sorry I cannot be in class again today. I guess as they say, bad things come in threes and my husband's grandmother has passed away.

Thanks for your patience and understanding.

Best regards,
Mrs. Lee

Agenda:

1. Make note: this Saturday's mock exam has been cancelled. Instead, you will be provided a window within which to take your First Language Paper 3, Section 1 mock exam today. Download the test here, and finish the first part of the section IN CLASS. You will have 1 hour to complete this section, including writing your plan.

Homework:

1. Speak to your family and friends and arrange to have no interruptions for 1 hour. At that time, take the section 2 part of the FL Paper 3 Mock exam. Per usual, there is no use of technical devices, white out, or high lighters during the exam and you must write in blue or black pen.

2. The mark scheme is linked here. However, do not open the mark scheme until you have completed the exam, section 1 in class and section 2 at home.

Section 1 and 2: your suggested homework: Complete both section 1 and 2 in your home in a 2 hour sitting. Then follow step 2 above.

3. Annotate both your written exam work to demonstrate you've carefully re-read it looking for the specific features needed in your response by the Mark Scheme AND lightly annotate the Mark Scheme itself to show that you've carefully read it. If you choose not to print out the Mark Scheme, then make your notes on a separate piece of paper and attach it to your exam, titling the page Mark Scheme Notes.

4. Create a box on your paper on the first page that looks like so:

Homework:

1. All three worksheets of the above poems will be turned in.
2. Write your version of A Birthday, by Christina Rosetti. The following template:

First stanza:
My love is like <insert naturally occurring symbol of a>;
My love is like <insert naturally occurring symbol of a>;
My love is like <insert naturally occurring symbol of a>;
My heart is <a> than all of these
Because my <b> has come to me.

Second stanza:
Directive + image of decorum to supplement <a>;
Directive + image of decorum to supplement <a>;
Directive + image of decorum to supplement <a>;
Because the <c> of my life
Is come, my  <b> has come to me.

Example:

     My love is like a well fed babe
          nestled 'gainst a swollen breast;
     My love is like the speckled sand
          meeting water shore to shore;
     My love is like the swelling blur
          above the heat and before recompense;
     My heart's cup run over more than all of these
          Because my love has come to me.

     Chisel rocks into light-shifting shapes,
         and toss them at the feet of more;
     Mill cloth with silk and vermillion dye,
          and drape it across a binding scroll;
     Simmer sauces of wine and rare design,
           to dash tender and succulent against the teeth.
     Because the genesis of my life
          Is come, love has come to me.

Monday, February 4, 2013

Tuesday, Feb. 5th (section 3), Wednesday, Feb. 6th (section 1 and 2)

Agenda:

Descriptive papers were handed back to students with rubrics and comments. Students were to hand-in a second descriptive paper that reflected correction and learning from first attempt. Many students opted to take back their homework for a second revision on their second attempt. The second revision is due on Thursday, Feb. 7th for section 3.

Homework (for Section 3):

1. Complete the worksheet attached here, using your own observations of the poem. DO NOT RESEARCH your answers as it hands over the authority of the poem to an external source and also takes away the the experience of uncovering meaning and arriving at a personal response--our very goal when analyzing literature. Also, the document is not editable, so please print it out and then write out your answers with your poem booklet next to you.

2. Rewrite your descriptive paper with it in mind that you are to
   a. Write a plan (Paragraph 1: orientating the reader to the situation and setting; Paragraph 2: allowing for movement for the writer, changing focus; Paragraph 3: interaction or movement of some sort experienced by the voyeur or the parties involved)
   b. Use 5 senses (auditory, visual, somatosensory gustatory, and olfactory)
   c. Complex, compound and simple sentence structure
   d. Literal sentences but with interesting verb choices and much detail
   e. Figurative language infused with personification, onomatopoeia, metaphors, similes, and other forms of imagery.

Homework (for Section 1):

Monday, January 21, 2013

Tuesday, January 22nd (section 3), Monday, January 21st (Section 1 and 2)

Agenda:

The midterm covering First Language Paper 2 was reviewed. Test-taking strategies were reviewed for questions 1 (Transformation), question 2 (Writer's Effects) and question 3 (Summary). For some classes, Mrs. Wilcox made an appearance and also reiterated test strategies and things to keep in mind.

FIRST LANGUAGE PAPER 2 ITEMS TO NOTE:

-->
Question 1: Genre transformation

·      Tone is the Key (especially with dialogue) and creation of the voices that the 2 women would have.  In any text (letter article etc) the students must understand the voice in which they will write.

·      Address all 3 bullets

·      Length – it states 1.5- 2 sides

·      Imagined endings - too much deviation from the text (2 women going for coffee)

Question 2: Writer’s effects
·      Don’t go outside paragraph for info.
·      Don’t paraphrase analyse (PETER)
·      Short quotes (Words Phrases Images)
·      Bullet parts a) b) should be labeled and dealt with separately
·      Organization of this section needs work:
Grouping like ideas together to avoid repetition
1st sentence a thesis: The author describes the church as a terrible place for the wedding or Mr Kougar is described as being clownish, fun loving and clueless.
3-4 PETERs per answer

Question 3: Summary
·      No intro or conclusion
·      Planning works on 3 levels:
·               to ensure you have enough ideas (20+ to allow for errors in this one the three letters only got one point)
·               to avoid lifting from the text
·               to organize the ideas into similar ideas to avoid repetition or excess words.

Homework:

Since most students struggled with question 2 (Writer's Effects), students are to re-read the following excerpt and attempt the test prompt for section a only. Length: 1/2 to 3/4 a page only!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Paragraph 4: The church was a barn of a place, full of gloomy, eerie corners that goodness knows what livestock might inhabit. An intermittent dripping could be heard from somewhere far away, for today it was raining heavily and with age the roof had become an ill-fitting jigsaw. The congregation was aware of an unpleasant clamminess inside the church. Mrs Ferris-Grebe had chosen this place for her daughter’s wedding, as she and the major had been married here twenty-five years before.

2 Re-read the descriptions of:
  1. (a)  the church in paragraph 4;
Select words and phrases from these descriptions, and explain how the writer has created effects by using this language. [Total: 10]

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
